Excluding bites cobra, speeding tickets and root canals, many things are more experienced in combinations of two. Think margaritas salt, beer, brats and sauerkraut, or a free day in the outdoors with your spouse, children or a good friend. Duality is one of the themes of life everlasting. Let's be brave and ride ATV add to that list. Some might say, 2-up ATVs have been made obsolete by two people side by side, but we strongly disagree. UTVs have their advantages, and is very fun, but two passengers are permitted on most ATV trails, take up less space, usually cost less and can offer a greater share of traveling physically, it which is important for amateurs like us.
Note that the 2 companies represent approximately 6.7 percent of the ATV industry – a segment that grew in recent years, therefore, the expansion of the proliferation of choices available.
We recently honored the Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI Touring 2008 as the Year of the ATV, but a new jurisdiction of the Can-Am Outlander Max Freshener and Arctic Cat's innovative Cruiser models lay the groundwork for a full 2-up comparison test.
Our team of three couples test – a set of friends, some soon to be relatives (pending marriage) and a married couple which is recorded that many miles aboard the 2-up over the past three years and a half. Was a wide range of ATV experience – a perfect place to dissect the crew and review only three machines.
Loaded and carried on the shores of huge Lake Mille Minnesota Lakes to travel in the Red Top ATV Trail – a typical, tree-lined riding public with a varied terrain. With a length of old rail bed wash, wide connector trails that cross the forest and a technique of "High Adventure section, Red Top had the range necessary for an investigation.
3rd Place – Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI Touring
With four different models, Polaris has a wide selection of 2-up variants of different audiences. Its X2s have a folding rear seat that transforms into a bed load while the more comfortable Touring models are designed for couples seeking to put serious miles on a larger, plush rear seat is fixed to a dramatic improvement in the accommodation of passengers in compromising X2.
Based in the old Sportsman chassis, as opposed to arrogance, XP introduced new last summer, the Sportsman Touring is available as a 500 or a 800. We wanted to test the best 2-ups available, so we went for the 800 Touring, with its powerful 760cc double cylinder mill.
Features
Because its chassis has been on the market for years, but constantly updated, the Sportsman Touring has some surprises. That does not mean it is without great features, though, like a wheel Versatrac Turf inconspicuously as crossing your yard, plenty of storage Polaris exclusive and Active Descent Control, which offers four-wheel engine braking hard enough to stop a fully loaded quad heading a mountain trail without use the brakes.
Passenger-centric features include a rear seat that reclined over competitors ARCTIC CAT and Can-Am, built on two cupholders, angular "Vibration Isolation", and rubber and plastic handles height adjustable footrest that will also seek to minimize the vibration.
Another is good demand for all-wheel drive, independent suspension with MacPherson front stanchions and double A-arms at the rear a one inch back of the receiver, an attractive painted finish which Polaris says is nine times more scratch resistant and strong plastic regular wheels aluminum foundry. With a price of $ 9699, the Sport was the least expensive machine in the test for just $ 230 vs Arctic Cat – but it is the only machine here without a winch.
From the backseat
As mentioned, our group was a motley crew of testers – some on horseback 2-first, some very familiar riding quads in pairs. Each documented their impressions, rating various aspects of comfort, perceived quality, features and performance. All ratings given a strong emphasis on passenger comfort and accommodations.
What was the ultimate 2-up in years 2008 has lost its luster, according to our six-person team. Each of our testers unanimously rated as the Sportsman Touring platform less comfortable for passengers.
All the riders said that the cheap feeling too reclined back support and offer little lumbar support. The passenger seat is less satisfyingly cushy but its relatively flat shape made it difficult to stay on the ground, bouncing once in a while the rear rider to enter the driver in the back – no fun for all. The square-edged sword handles to do the trick, but was notable for being too close to the thighs and very tough, transmitting shock to most travelers, the arms and shoulders another, more forgiving compared to hand.
The footrest of passengers were also the targets of some griping. Beef? Too short, with boots hanging outside of the front and saw the lack of metal pins to the driver. While the rubber reduces vibration, is not required to maintain the bond backseat driver properly in place.
Speaking of shocks, our passengers said that the position of the rear of Polaris was too harsh over bumpy roads – even in the softer spring settings for the rear suspension has proved to be too rigid. It is a spacious platform, however, and better suited to a slower rate or shorter trips, which might be all that some users are looking for.
The driver for
From the driver's seat, it's hard to say, there is even a passenger on board as the Sportsman easily has enough power and capacity of the suspension to handle the added burden with full composure.
From a driver's perspective, the Sportsman is fun to drive and very predictable. Active Descent Control makes it especially Judiciously easy to regulate the speed of passenger comfort, which is a great quality in mountainous terrain or in tight forest trails with constant changes in speed the vehicle. One tester said that engine braking was too strong for his taste, but can be turned off with the flip of a switch. A spacious shelf allows plenty of space for the two corridors that stretch out without being too close for comfort.
Like most Sportsman models, the Touring is smooth driving offers low-effort steering and a soft pillow is home to all kinds of fun, once you start exploring the capabilities of the big motor – sufficient, although difficult to tell passengers not to share in the fun. A quick slap to the rear of the hull of the things crystal clear.
A passenger wishing summarized the change of walking tourism experience for rear seats clearer: "I do not enjoy it. I was struggling to stay throughout the trip." Like any father who reluctantly leads a grocery getter know, passenger comfort and safety is its top priority in the exercise of human cargo. We anxiously await improved Polaris 2-up on the XP chassis.
2nd Place – ARCTIC CAT TRV 700 H1 EFI Cruiser
Everyone was excited to try fantasy ARCTIC CAT 700 Cruiser, with its luxury steel blue metallic paint, attractive aluminum wheels, large and color-matched rear storage trunk, driver and passenger Heated front windshield and integrated side-view mirrors that gave the appearance of an upscale tourism motorcycles. In fact, with its standard lathe, what may be one of the most luxurious vehicles in the market.
We had hoped to test the Cruiser model 1000, driven by theft Thundercat H2 roaring 951cc engine, but we had to take what was available – the 700, with a powerful single-cylinder engine previously been praised for its smooth and progressive power. 700 Cruiser also costs $ 2500 less than the 1000 model, so it is likely to appeal to a wider audience.
Features
On the basis of the largest Arctic Cat TRV (two-rider vehicle) chassis, the Cruisers have a lengthened wheelbase has been stretched more than 8 inches one of his fellow passenger. Cruisers This provides the best handling characteristics and a sense of stability in the corners or on uneven terrain – that I find you, indeed, in any way. Cat's "ride" suspension lowers the center of gravity in the previous models, while maintaining 11 inches land, second to the Can-Am foot clearance.
Besides the aforementioned niceties, key features include durable style painting of automobiles, an electronic differential lock, built-in 2-inch receiver, a driver's cup holder and four-wheel dual A-arm independent suspension.
From the backseat
Curvy grips and a deluxe rear seat Arctic Cat became a popular choice for passengers, with a tester call the best seat in the test. The front is less rigid than the others, a quality that allows the seat and handles to absorb some of the strokes for a less stressful trip.
One of the problems encountered by all was that the curved handles arc too far towards the passenger in the front, leaving some with a bruised thigh. A simple fix would make the Cat's back seat nearly flawless. The rear seat bottom is slightly curved just enough to keep all in place. Also good, the footrests are big and grippy, which is crucial to allow passengers to remain in place and avoid being shocked at the rear of the driver.
For the driver
On a passenger transport is of little consequence to the powerful and Cruiser. There's more body roll that makes other machines, but high ground, a stable platform for engine braking and good to make this easy for a driver to supply a quiet stroll. With peppier engines, Can-Am and Polaris are a bit more fun to pilot aggressively through the forests and on long straight stretches, but affects the Arctic Cat brand: comfort for two people. The 1000 Cruiser undoubtedly has a lot of power for all conditions.
In the first track off the whole world wanted to see the future intelligent of the lock of the rear cargo box to the rules for ATV cavernous storage. His performance was not meeting expectations, with one calling it "weak." Mastering proper closure and blockade was a team effort, but figured it out and the space used to transport beverages, pens, notebooks, a tire repair kit and extra layers of clothing. ARCTIC CAT all gave high marks for providing such abundant storage, useful in almost any trip, but the table could use some refinement.
The fresh appearance of the windshield and side mirrors were also betrayed by poor execution. The plastic windshield vibrated loose several times during our test, while the mirrors are also released and were generally difficult to adjust a position. Above all, we looked a vibrant reflection of ourselves.
Finally, the cruise speed also indicated a diagnosis of EFI, and the machine failed to start shortly. It may be a bug once, but was not well received by the gallery. We are still awaiting word on what retailers are concerned.
One can always save some money with the H1 TRV 700 that comes with the windshield, heated front and offices of the storage box for an optional bed load of plastic, but the Cruiser would be better able cold weather riding, with his great shield and heated. For summer riding, we have removed the shaking, dirt, collecting windshield and mirrors.
Even with a few bit disconcerting as the EFI / speedo question the charge and clunky box removable windshield annoying the ARCTIC CAT TRV 700 H1 EFI Cruiser is a machine which is nice comfortable for the driver and passenger, has good looks and photogenic enough storage to actually go off the beaten path.
Place 1 – Can-Am Outlander Max 800R EFI XT
Since the turn of the key to deter the theft of digital meters of luxury, comfortable seats handholds to the top, the exhaust noise to note that the power heady planted in their seats, the Can-Am Outlander Max 800R oozes quality and fun. It is motivated by more powerful engine for the test, and one of the most powerful ATV on the market, all but one member of our testing of six people voted in the Can-Am team over the platform attractive group – drivers and passengers.
Features
His evidence at the right price below 11 is higher in the large group, but ours was a middle-level XT model (in contrast to the opulent LTDs) that still cover the majority of the standards of anyone. Less generously equipped models are available for less, as they only come around without the wheels and fantasy. But we like the snazzy aluminum wheels and always wanted a lathe in a machine too heavy abuse.
Most of the good thing about the Can-Am also makes it unique – a "debate on" the framework that helps to balance the Outlander a little less than others, TTI rear suspension that reduces wheel scrub yet offers a smooth and sporty, a no-brainer automatic locking front differential, a system digital security and wild explosive V-Twin engine.
Hydraulic discs on board, while unique, are the major defects of the machine with sound cheap crunchy when pulling hard on the brakes. Previous experience with Can-Am four wheels of similar design have shown that these brakes to be very sensitive to water – a design questionable call on a vehicle, we say.
The model 2010 dual mode of address was not available for our consideration, but only sweeten treatment in our eyes, the lower the handlebars and high-light steering effort Outlander demerits.
From the backseat
For passengers, Can-Am has few obvious defects. The forehead is not heated as the lush Arctic Cat, but that are outside of the curve the driver without causing black and blue on marks our passengers legs. The rear seat bottom is curved to keep the passenger in place, which works great, but a woman fitting this seat hump was a bit intrusive. This makes the back seat a place uncomfortable for men.
One foot of soil in this team proves you can have the best of both worlds: a chassis, which alleviates the rocks sportier handling with minimal body roll. For a couple, at least, the Can-Am seems to favor the discretion slideshow spacious, well under way. In the rough sections Rockies, the Can-Am a good ride for runners, a little less forgiving if the Arctic Cat. "It could take advantage this machine all day without trouble on the trails or the ground, "said a happy camper." As a passenger, I like this machine. "
For The Driver
Behind the bars of the Outlander, it's hard to say, there is even a passenger hanging on back there. Out of camber sections, rapid braking, rough trails, hills and curves all not to disturb the stability of the chassis and suspension and are easily able to the task. If you're looking to scare the bejesus of a passenger, this machine has the speed to do so. It also has the poise and polish to any passenger on a casual, comfortable ride, although the rapid power stroke of the machine makes a little nervous.
Since we know that many owners of 2-up just a passenger Travel with some of the time, we like the Can-Am rear seat is removable and can be replaced by a small storage box. Make the swap could not be easier or faster, in contrast to the Cat's fussy accessories. Both with a lock on reassuring click, so you can be that everything is properly protected.
At the end of the day, scored all but one Can-Am Outlander Max 800R as your favorite ride. On the facts it is easy to see why: the quality evident, one consisting of chassis, an overachieving engine, a comfortable seat, a good hand and foot in front and the ability to transfigure rapidly between two people and a machine.
If you are riding solo or with a co-pilot, the Can-Am offers greater expectations, and looks great while doing it. We suspect in addition to the address and a short cut only to improve the graphics Max 2010 – our new favorite, no commitment ATV 2-up.
