I think what you are trying to describe is the shift lever change the rear derailleur and shifter. We will have a 21 speed bike for example … The handle (actually pedal area) will have three gears in it. That is controlled by the switch and shift mechanism is usually located on the left handlebar. There, you will see speeds of 1, 2 and 3. The rear derailleur controls the rear axle or gear rack. In our case – 7 speeds. This is usually located on the right side handlebar. The lower gear may be on the first side first left and right side. This should be used to pull hills only. The highest possible gear would be third on the left side and 7 on the right side. Most often in the flat part of flat land near the train I'm in 2nd on the left and somewhere between second and sixth on the right side. Perhaps someone on the bike you described, replaced a broken gear lever with one that does not match exactly. Thus … two different looking gear levers. Meanwhile work – You're good to go.
